Hello all and a very happy holidays to you! It has yet again been 6 months since any edits to this website, so not only will we have a brief summary for you to check out here, but we'll also point you towards some photo albums for more viewing details! :)
So, in the past 6 months, we started off by becoming homeowners again (yay!). :) Luckily this involved no packing or moving as we purchased the house we were renting. Home ownership has been great so far and we are in the process of having the outside of the house all fixed up (replacing water-damaged wood, new gutters and painting the outside). We hope to have a freshly painted house this week (and will post photos in the next six months! :) In the meantime, you can see photos of our house by viewing this photo gallery. We spent much of June with family including a camping trip with the Whites and a visit from Mara's sister. At the very end of June we participated in the Great Urban Race in Denver. This is a race where you do a scavenger hunt around the city traveling only by foot or public transportation. It was lots of fun and luckily our parents were on-call to google various clues. Next year they are off the hook as we have purchased iPhones! :)
For Mara's birthday weekend in early July, we painted her office a color other than pink! It is a much nicer peach color now and she feels significantly more productive. :) There were a couple other projects around the house as Will refinished his old dresser (which looks amazing now) and he fixed the oven by replacing the igniter for the main part of the oven with the igniter for the broiler. We don't have a broiler anymore, but considering we never used it, this was a great way to extend the life of our not-so-good oven. :)
In late July we decided we wanted to paint our house. Originally we had grand plans of scraping off all the lead-based paint before re-painting. We got exactly one door and one window done in about 3-4 weekends and bailed on it and hired someone! :)
This Summer we also started cooking a lot more with fresh organic fruits and veggies (delivered to our door!). It was fun to figure out what to make with kohlrabi, delicata squash, kale and the like. We made some pretty tasty dishes!
The first week in September we took a vacation to California. We started in San Francisco and ended in San Diego (flying in between). We had a wonderfully relaxing time including visiting with friends, biking around in wine country (we HIGHLY recommend Healdsburg), eating lots of tasty food, and attending (and being in) a wedding. :) Photos can be seen here. On September 20th, Mara ran her second half marathon of her lifetime. She shaved about 13 minutes off her time from last year (yay!). We then spent the rest of the day actually celebrating Will's birthday. :)
At the end of September, Mara's grandfather passed away after a long battle with cancer. Mara was happy to have been able to visit with him multiple times before this happened and have him tell her his life story so she could document it. Those are memories that will last a long time. The funeral was really nice and amazing just how many people attended! Even the guy who owned the candy shop Mara's grandfather used to buy from attended. A great tribute to a very charismatic man. In October we got to attend the wedding of Will's nephew, Justin. It was a small ceremony at Heritage Square in Golden, CO. We had a fun time eating and visiting with family (and dancing!). Also in October, Mara spent a full weekend up in the mountains scrapbooking and being fed really tasty food. Mara came home, excited to show off the progress she made on her albums over the weekend, when Will told her that he had spent his weekend making a digital TV antenna for $1.44. Yes, you heard that right! He used 8 donated wire hangers from the cleaners (thanks, Dependable Cleaners!), a piece of old wood from the garage, some screws, and purchased washers from Ace Hardware for the forementioned $1.44. :) For the amount he spent, he probably could have bought a really nice one, but this one works great and he can now watch Broncos games knowing he made that possible! :) We also got our attic insulated in October, so Will spent much of another weekend up in the attic cleaning up, installing cable and phone lines to other rooms and prepping for the contractors to come blow 10 times as much insulation as we previously had. In addition, he installed a new programmable thermostat. Do we see a theme here (Mara scrapbooks while Will fixes things)? :) On October 28th, Denver had its first big snow of the year. Needless to say, Anika was thrilled! We took her to the park to trounce through a foot and a half of snow. The colder and snowier the weather, the more energy she has!
We had a busy (and food-filled) month of November. We went to a wedding in Dallas (where Mara got to see many of her Rice friends!), had a pre-Thanksgiving meal at the White household, hosted a meal of both of our immediate families, went to Thanksgiving dinner on the day-of, and went to the Boulder Dinner Theatre with the Abrams family. It took us at least a week to recover from all that eating! (We're still full). :) The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Leah (Mara's sister), Will and Mara assembled Will's GIANT Christmas tree and decorated it. The two Jews were super excited to get to deorate a tree. :)
Afterwards, Penfield (the cat) was super excited to get to eat the tree (yes, this is the same cat who ate dental floss). Luckily there have been no trips to the emergency room. :)
As you can see, it's been a busy but good 2009 for us. |
